MessageAuthor

On my 1987 740 2.0i Im sure there should be a pipe that goes from the exhaust ( downpipe )which goes to the airfilter box . Mine has not got one , is this a must have item as Ive been driving around in it as it is . What does the pipe do .

I would it should improve the fuel effy in the winter. You have to buy a length and trim it to size.

Hi, Actually, lots of people recommend that you remove the pipe and make sure the flap in the filter box is closed properly. Yes it helps pre-heating the engine in cold climates. But we're in the Uk. Not a cold climate.! Have it in Germany or Sweden though and yes, get the pipe re-fitted because it does get cold in those places (-20 and colder!) Des. . . ;)

Mine's been missing since summer (when I accidentally cut it in half with the fan) and since it's gotten colder, I've noticed that it runs colder in the mornings now and I don't get heat as fast. It hasn't reached freezing yet here, but I have noticed a difference in the heating.

Mike, don't worry about it unless it gets really cold regular minus temps all day long, it only serves a purpose first thing when the engine is cold however you can replace it if you really want to, go to a motorfactors and they should stock it you may have to call round first thought (measure diameter though - cause they vary in the shop) avoid going to a main stealers they will charge you a massive amount to replace it. I ripped the one in my old 740GLE 2.3 out because it destroyed all the belts when it got stuck in them at high speeds on the motorway. It was off all through the winter and it made no difference at all however I did re fit one when it came to selling it just for cosmetics only. Ali
