940 S Electrics

MessageAuthor

Volvo 940 S Estate 1994 The fuel guage of the above vehicle works very intermittantly, about once a week it may work for about 10 minutes then its back to zero again. I just set the trip meter to zero every time I refuel, but I would like to fix the problem. I have checked the usual - fuse - connections etc but, another electrical problem, that was inherited with the car when I purchased it in 2002, long time ago I know, are the dashboard 'warning lights'. Occasionally they will all light when I switch on the ignition, usually when the outside temperature is pretty cold. Could these two problems be linked together ? perhaps the circuit board is faulty. Any suggestions would be gratefully received or should I just call in an 'auto-electrician' ? Regards Bob

Hi, I have heard that the gauge can go south.. However, given the other issues it could also be the PCB which is on plastic. You could try an instrument panel from another 940 and see how that performs.. Doesn't take long to remove - 2 screws and some pressure... Des. . . ;)

Could it be a faulty fuel sender unit.

Before you pull the instrument pannel, check the A post grounds for corrosion. I have a '93 940 with the same problem. pulled the dash and tightened & cleaned the circuit board more times than I can count (well, that aint that much). Cleaning and putting goo in the ground connectors seems to have fixed the problem.
